The US Air Force started as a branch of the US Army, and then became separate on September 18, 1947. NASA is a civilian agency with no military mission. I haven't reviewed the arguments why a Space Force should be separated from the existing Air Force, but it might be a good idea. [popularmechanics.com] Someone needs to defend the USA so the comedians on agnostic.com can continue in peace and safety to mock the government that defends them. That's a vital mission, isn't it?

As ridiculous as it sounds, "star wars" defense strategy rhetoric gave Reagan the edge/leverage to break the Soviets in a past that seems now too long ago..... ?

Worked for reagan so of course he is going to try it as you sing hossanas to "star wars defense"... what's next? "lord of the lies" re-election campaign. "game of podiums". etc, etc, etc.... it is as trump casino in Las Vegas... never happened.
Yes, it does sound ridiculous, because it is ridiculous. It wouldn't work and everyone, especially the USSR knew it wouldn't work. That senile old fool Reagan didn't break anyone; and, it wasn't that long ago. I was there. Trust me, your story is pure fantasy. Where do you get this stuff?
My understanding is that the most powerful, destructive, and current theatre of warfare is cyberspace. That is where all manner of real damage can be done, not wafting around in the atmosphere with space guns as in Moonraker. Perhaps Mr Trump's un-American buddies have deliberately caused him to mis-direct funds from the real problem to this grand and non-existent one. My opinion is that he is narcissistic and foolish enough to be guided by the nose like a piggy up the garden path. Do big projects like this not have to get through some democratic process to be funded? (Sorry, I'm a Brit and not familiar with the US parliamentary process).

Can I please get asylum in your country. Yes our Idiot in Chief is a real POS. There would have to be Congressional approval to establish another branch of our military. But our Congress, which is mostly Republican has been rubber stamping all of his insanity. Not a word out of any of them. If I can't get asylum, would your country consider invading our country and taking us back? You could imprison all of the nut jobs.
Stupid beyond belief we can't afford his wall or his stupid golfing or a space force we need infrastructure that is not sold to idiots that will do a bad job and cost us 3 times what it should

@BucketlistBob yes and more military $$$. Good news is that to add this branch to the military he has to get Congressional approval. Bad news is that the Republican jerks in Congress will probably vote it in.
@AmelieMatisse. Does it make you wonder if its that time to do this? The other countries are maybe a year ahead of us. IDK...
@BucketlistBob interesting question. Where are the $$$ coming from to do it? I'm curious about what other countries are doing and the ramifications. Another fear for me is that we have so many problems here that are not being addressed. But perhaps these guys will go into space and come back with the news that they couldn't find god either.
