I had someone get really mad at me the other night. They were making claims about some fantastical subjects, which when pressed to provide evidence they said I was being close-minded. High pointed out that claiming something is true without actually knowing whether or not it is true, is lying. He got pretty mad at me and said, " are you calling me a liar?" To which I responded, "well do you match their criteria I just gave you for a liar? Then, there ya go."
I get so sick and tired of religious people but more than religious people are the ones that claim they don't have religion but still push the same logical fallacies. Like chemtrails and Yogi's that don't need to eat or drink water or Chinese hospitals that cure cancer and tumors with positive thinking... Those people bother me way more. What do you guys think?
It's interesting to note how often believers attempt to invert their position to put others on the defensive. "What you do you mean, the supernatural is completely unsubstantiated? You need to prove that it isn't real." Or "We're not the crazy ones by talking about magical and invisible beings. Refusing to accept our ideas makes you the crazies." Then there are feeble attempts to defend the absurd by saying "The bible doesn't have any errors, absurdities, contradictions, or atrocities. It's you, the spiritually blind and ignorant, who don't know how to read it correctly." As for accusations of someone else being closed minded, it's an easy out for believers. It's not the fact that what they say sounds like utter nonsense, and sometimes pure gibberish. No, it's you, the skeptic, refusing to consider how profound they find their own self-identified truths.
This is kind of a soap box I sometimes jump on every time I'm up against people like that.
It's not "narrow minded" to ask for evidence. It's not "hate speech" to disagree with someone. And if someone is lying, and I call them a liar, that doesn't make me a hater. It's a simple diagnoses of the conversation as it's being presented. It's not bigoted to call out pseudo science, and just because we disagree, doesn't mean we have to be enemies.
I really wish that we were taught how to have a discussion in high school or college so we could actually have civil discourse in our society.
Some people will accuse you of being close-minded if you simply dare to disagree with you. They don't appreciate the need for evidence or good reasons. They seem to feel that what seems obvious to them, should be obvious to the person they're arguing with. I think we all have a tendency to do this to some extent, but people who are good rational thinkers probably do better with seeing past this sort of mistake.
I sure felt that way when I explained the person who never ate or drank water was a charlatan, because your body cannot function at the chemical level without them. You can't breath without using and respiratory water, so you would dry out without it in rapid order. This guy claimed everything the guru dude needed was generated by the pineal gland. I pointed out that breaks the laws of physics, you can't just "create" energy and molecules from nothing! He said to "not be closed minded".... I don't want to live on this planet anymore...
I really empathize with them. I was raised a fundamentalist and was one. They don't anger me, they make me feel sorry for them and want to help them. Some are just too brainwashed to be helped.
This happens to me pretty much everyday..... they act like I kicked their dog and called them ugly. I think it comes from never being asked questions about what they're saying and a complete lack if understanding what valid proof is
I even told him before he started that I have very strict guidelines for whether or not I believe something and I don't believe anything unless I can show it to be true. I guess he didn't understand what " show to be true" means... because he just gave me a couple anecdotes and some stupid pictures and videos that didn't show anything and expected me to believe him full stop.
I'm around religious people 24/7. I ignore their comments made about god and jesus. Sometimes I will reply with some comment to contradict their beliefs. I'm not trying to make anyone feel cognitive dissonance. Sometimes people exasperate me with bringing up god in every single conversation.
I got into a little argument with my girlfriend who sent me a chain letter. I told her this is as useful as prayer and she responded that luck is different because luck has been proven. I'm glad we were texting because the look on my face would have escalated the little argument into a full-fledged fight. I decided to drop it. To me, it's just one of those irrelevant topics that go nowhere positive
People no longer make me mad. No longer give the bitch the satisfaction. Don't be bother anymore, them seeing you happy really cause and effect in them after all with little effort from your part.
Yeah and people who share or post links to articles the person didn't read themselves and it really discredits the stance they're taking. Better to be thought of as a fool than to open your mouth an remove all doubt.
