Yugoslavia is a good study, not only for linguistics, But the study of society and the prevalence of clans of similar people raised and taught to dislike outer clans or accept certain ones. Historically, it was the strong man Tito who held the country together and pretty fair for all until his death and the majority of the army were Serbians, who had the weapons. And, those old rivalries resurfaced.
