Ultimately ... maintaining interest. What makes life compelling for me is satisfying my curiosity and learning new things. What makes other people compelling is sharing that curiosity and commitment to learning and growth. What enables all that is growing in empathy and compassion for others, in a society that's at least reasonably committed to enabling and encouraging all its members in that enterprise.
