21st century beliefs

Here we are...2018, and l struggle with what people believe in.

Kinda hoped that things like religion and other belief systems etc would have fallen along the wayside by now😟

What other things that people believe in should have been relegated to the dustbin of history by now?

Let's see:
Flat Earth theory
Racism
Capitalism
Consumerism
and many many more...

Dietl Level 7 Sep 10, 2018

@Matias
I don't believe in money. I use money. But I don't think money has to vanish for capitalism to be overcome. In an authoritarian system (which I'm not for btw) where the market is under full control money could still be used for instance.
I would see the following believes as part of consumerism:

  • Accumulating materialistic wealth is inherently good.
  • Your worth as a human being is determined by how much you have.
  • Everyone should strive to be rich.
  • Selling things is more important than creating a balanced system.

I could think of some more, but I think you get the picture

@Dietl I don't see any of your bullet points as inherent to capitalism. They are inherent to consumerism. It would be possible to construct a capitalist society that didn't have an emphasis on acquisition of bright shiny objects.I would suggest that smaller, less diverse and self-contained democracies such as Denmark largely achieve this classless, laid back, contented vibe. In part because they have no choice. They have to have healthy interdependencies with other countries because they don't have 100% of the resources to go their own way and tell everyone else they're doing it wrong.

@mordant
I believe you misread. Those bullet points were about consumerism.
I'm fine with social democracies but I would prefer a post capitalist system especially on a global level.

@Dietl You are right, I misread. My brain fart. I don't know about "post capitalist" but for sure I'd favor "post unbridled capitalism" and I'm mostly a social / socialist democrat myself. I volunteered for Bernie in '16 and it's the first time I felt it worthwhile to be involved in politics. Pity America, or even the Democratic Party, wasn't ready for it, looked a gift horse in the mouth, and seized defeat from the jaws of victory [sigh].

This is gonna sound like a joke, and I guess it halfway is but ...

Personally, I am shocked people still think toilet paper goes in the under position. Or the over position. Or any position. Using TP is gross and there are waaaaay better, more efficient and far more hygienic ways to clean your ass.

We're listening...

@Dietl Water. A bidet costs more up front but in the long run is cheaper and waaaay better than TP.

@Xuande
I don't have space for a bidet in my flat, but that would surely be nice. Okay you win, your answer is better than mine.

Just curious , is there a blow dry for after the wash cycle ?

@Cast1es
Now my life will never be complete until I have had such an amazing experience.

A bidet. In my day it was corn cobs or a Sears and Roebuck catalog in the old outhouse.
