QUESTION Only the Truth Will Prevent Harm - Council for Secular Humanism

Muslims are reasoning (and, hence, persuadable) beings, not robots programmed to blindly follow the edicts of their faith. In fact, if all Muslims practiced their religion exactly according to scripture, then we would see much more terror in the world.

Furthermore, what does the existence of ex-Muslims prove if not that walking away from the faith is possible, even in the most dire of circumstances? It would be fair to say, I think, that no other apostates face the hardships routinely visited upon apostates from Islam. And yet, there are indications that atheism is growing in the Muslim world. While it is true that a disturbing number of Muslims are being radicalized in front of their computer screens, many others are leaving the faith altogether.

It is very important to realize that Muslims do not have sole proprietorship on radicalization of people, either directly or online. White supremacist hate groups like the Neo-Nazis and the KKK have been doing it since the last millennium, and those groups have proliferated and escalated there public profile since the advent of the internet. Also, we cannot leave out anti-government militants and militia groups either. These provided the impetus behind Timothy McVeigh's act of domestic terrorism of using a truck bomb to blow up the Affred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City in 1995, which was he said was his justifiable response to the United States goverment's actions at the confrontation at Ruby Ridge in 1992, and the Waco siege in 1993. Radical fringe groups, be they religion-based or anti-government, prey on people who are feeling isolated and disenfranchised by society, and they tell those isolated and disenfranchised people that by joining the radical fringe group's crusade and performing acts of violence in the group's name, that their lives, and often their deaths, will have lasting meaning. It is in using this twisted psychology and the innate pathological hatred for the status quo of the people those groups recruit, that results in the birth of terrorists.
