LINK Florida boy arrested after refusing to recite Pledge of Allegiance in class - Vox

Sounds like the sub drew attention to the kid not saying the pledge, then she has him arrested. The school admits the kid didn't break the law, so why did an 11yo need to go to juvy?

He wasn't arrested for not saying the pledge of alligance. He was arrested for the fuss he made after the substitute teacher made a racist remark to him. He raised a ruckus and fought back when securityvtried to remove him.

Right. I read that. I could very well be wrong, but it sounded like the sub brought attention to the fact that he wasn't reciting the pledge and she escalated the situation, so when the security guy shows up, she's already got the kid wound up and ready for action. That they specified that he was nonviolent, sounds like the kid sassed, but wasn't physical. The sub created the ruckus and suggested that the kid live elsewhere. Those adults failed that kid. They had an opportunity to resolve the matter and blew it.

@chalupacabre I agree completely. In the subs defense, nobody told her that standing for the pledge is not mandatory at her school or in the Constitution. But she. the security officer and the Principal failed that child and the other children in the class. You are correct in your assessment.

I teach high school in an all Native American high school. We say the pledge of alligiance in English or in Navajo every day. Students are asked to stand and cover their hearts with their hand. It is also not mandatory, but by in large they all do it without being asked.

I have had a couple over the years who refused on political and moral grounds due to past abuses to their people by the US gov't. I can empathize and do not force them. Their parents and grandparents have been among the first to step up and serve when needed. There is a good sense of service within the community.

@t1nick they fall in line to make sure they don't stand out for ridicule.

Are we really given a choice when everyone stand for the pledge? If you don't follow the herd, you're a non-conformist.

We continue to treat native americans like they have no rights to be pissed that we killed them and took the land they knew was sacred. Then we start desecrating it for our own gains, logging, cotton, tobacco, oil. What choice do they really have.

@Al-Bundy_59. partially agree and patially disagree. There is no judgement or question if they do not stand. They are not looked upon negatively if they do not as everybody is aware of the sensitivity of their relationship with the gov't.

The Natives do have some choice today, at least the casino tribes do. They have strong lobbies and weild a lot of economic clout. Not true for all tribes. There is still a lot of historic trauma that debilitates many tribes.
