Sir or Ma'am

Why do people get offended when I call them Sir or Ma'am? My parents taught me to address people respectfully. When I use those terms people seem embarrassed.

I hate when people who don’t know me personally see my name tag and call me by my name without asking for it. I’d rather the neutral calling than. Generalized, doesn’t roll off the tongue or sound right, but it’s still better than name-calling.

I'd be concerned if someone called me Ma'am but Sir is ok, in fact it's way better than someone I don't know attempting a smarm offensive and using my first name without even a 'by your leave'!!!!!
