This is just a warning to all of us...even we Brits. Although aimed at Americans, obviously, the comparisons with the Brexiteers in the U.K. are inescapably obvious to me. The same rhetoric is used and recycled from history, we will ignore it at our peril!

It is sad but every century has had it's battles between extreme idealists and humanists it seems to be a natural rhythm in the evolution of societies,Nationalists, fascist, communists, imperialists, tribalists, theocrats, feudalists.
Every thing was better back then, all the fault of the others who have arisen since then, people need a strong hand to hold the whip.
They cause misery, leave us with warnings and then a few generations later we all forget everything and start hating all over again.
Nothing is ever new, the average human is an angry ape screaming at the moon to go away and bring back the old times when the sun shone and the bats and moths stayed in their caves where they belong.

First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out —
Because I was not a socialist.

Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out —
Because I was not a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out —
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me — and there was no one left to speak for me.

Martin Niemöller

I read these words when about 11, and they made a deep impression upon me.......never truer than right now!
