I had read years ago how money generally makes humans less empathetic and ultimately terrible human beings.

I truly believe it.
There was a short-lived movement awhile back that wanted to make it not possible for originators of great wealth (millionaires and billionaires) to pass their wealth on to their heirs. The idea being that when hiers become wealthy through no effort of their own it breeds corruption, unethical behavior, and pampered super class.
