The really stupid are always afraid. The Republicans figured out how to tap into that fear a long time ago, and now we are all paying for it.

When alcoholics stop drinking, they often keep many of the dysfunctional personality traits they developed while they were drinking. People refer to them as "dry drunks".
I think when religious people lose faith they can also keep many of their irrational fears that religion instilled into them. Fear is what the right wing is based on. Critical thinking skills is the only real cure for the stupidity that comes with irrational fears.
@snytiger6 There should be a recovery program for them: Fuckwits Anonymous.
