Beatlegeuse Supernova

Since we've had to work on physically distancing, over the last couple of weeks I've started reading more about the red super giant beatlegeuse. It's put on quite a display for astronomers lately. Wondering if it could actually go supernova in our life-time!

Hope beatlegeuse will go supernova

Nerdle is a new online game that has taken the world by storm. It’s a fun and challenging math puzzle game that can be played on any device with an internet connection. In this game, players have to guess an equation with as few tries as possible. The game is gaining popularity because of its simplicity, addictiveness, and the fact that it’s free to play.

Betelgeuse is the brightest star in the constellation Orion, and its unusual behavior has scientists scratching their heads pacman 30th anniversary. However, they don't believe this unusual behavior will lead to a supernova explosion any time soon.

There is very little doubt that Betelgeuse will go supernova. The only question is "When?".

Astronomers now know that Betelgeuse's brightness varies because it basketball stars is a dying red supergiant star with a diameter 700 times bigger... Its famous dimming event a few years ago turns out to be evidence of a recent explosion rather than an approaching supernova.

Ugh....so it turns out that:
"the gas and dust around Betelgeuse hasn’t been affected by the star’s dimming.
heating from the stellar wind didn’t change during the dimming."

Seems like the ability of the star to generate heat didn't change even though it, "dimmed up to 40%". Looking forward to reading further analyses as they are published. For now the star is back to its normal luminosity.

Could it be possible that it already went supernova and we just haven't received light of it yet?

I voted yes. Assuming it’s far enough away.

Betelgeuse

Yes, I would like to see Betelgeuse go nova for the sake of learning more about the process in supergiants. It would also be a fascinating sight in our sky, day and night for a while.

Your "Beatlegeuse Supernova" is clickbait !
Why not label it properly -- as a question/poll/FICTION/whatever, NOT Science.

It wasn't meant to be click bait. There was an honest consideration that it might go supernova once it started dimming so dramatically. Only recently it was confirmed that it's getting brighter again. In fact, this latest cycle of dimming and brightening has given the scientific community. I still hope it'll go supernovae in our lifetime. Based on scientific estimates, it could happen tomorrow, or in 100,000 years. 😉

From the article above:
"Some astronomers suspect the star is nearing its death. They argue that Betelgeuse’s freakish decline could soon culminate in a sudden end triggered by a violent explosion known as a supernova. However, given how old and close we know Betelgeuse to be, a supernova event in our lifetime seems quite improbable."

Beatlegeuse's life-cycle would be particularly interesting since it could culminate in supernova that might give rise to a new black hole just 640 light years from our solar system. What a gift it would be to be able to observe!! 🙂

@SergeTafCam The sciencewire link would-have been useful/informative to-begin-with. 😛
