Since many of our members like to keep some semblance of appearing anonymous, it could be a blending of a show of support for doing our part to curb the spread of the virus, and coyly keeping somewhat anonymous. Also, some masks are a fashion statement, with some being very clever or a beautiful print. But yes, if a member is trying to show what they look like, a mask would be silly.

Never understood why people want to update their photo at all. Surely consistency is the most useful thing you can have, in something which is designed to help people recognize you, and connect your posts and comments together.

Havent you ever heard of virtue signaling? It's a social thing, like belonging to groups that reflect your beliefs, or posting about your outrage regarding other peoples choices. It's all about making yourself feel better than others. Look it up.
