Back then is was the Soviet threat. The mindset was, if they can send a rocket in to space before we do, the may have better weapons than us. That's what the space race was all about. Once we got to the moon, we had nothing else to prove. If you realize what they did 50 years ago, it's pretty amazing.

It was. The computer in the landing craft had a 1 megabite hard drive. About the same as a hand held calculator now. And it froze during landing. Armstrong had to take over manually. By the skin of their teeth they got there.
