I’ve never watched the Dr. Phil show, but I probably will today and tomorrow, because the season opener, a two day feature, will focus on the cult that recently tried to relocate to Kauai from Colorado.

Because not much happens on Kauai, this cult had many of us fascinated as well as in protective mode, should they succeed in relocating their entire operation and members to our fragile little island.

The leader of the cult angered the local people here, after she proclaimed herself "Pele, goddess of fire and volcano" on top of being the Female Jesus, Queen of Lemuria, and many other personifications.

We feared the cult members would not only prey on the lost and broken souls who are currently residing here (nope, I’m not one of those) but also drain our public assistance resources, deal in drugs, menace our citizens with obscene language and threats of violence, which we could see on video and in real life by the folks who protested their presence, and of course, the rumors that new members who didn’t fit in have gone missing, after handing over their life savings.

I’m sure Dr. Phil will present a mind-numbing sensationalized version of trying to resolve the irony of this “mother of all creation” abandoning her own children to form the cult, and other puzzles, but I’ll watch it anyway.

I’ve become familiar with many of the characters, having watched the exposé of this cult by the articles, posts and videos shared by former cult members, family members of those currently in the cult and just the fascinated public.

If anyone else catches the Dr. Phil season opener today, or tomorrow's show, feel free to post your comments about it. I'm embarrassed that I'm so caught up in curiosity about this cult, but I'm also proud that our island persuaded them to leave.

curious--how'd the island ''persuade them to leave?"

Well when we were warned by former members of the cult that they were moving their operation to Kauai, with some background on what they are about, we were able to keep eyes on them, since they had to quarantine for 14 days. We knew where they were staying and also made aware that they live stream their activities for several hours per day.

Because the community was concerned, our local law enforcement had eyes on them, and when they moved to an ocean front home in a predominantly Hawaiian neighborhood, and their leader live streamed that she was "Pele" a cultural goddess in Hawaii, many local Hawaiians took offense.

So, the locals came out in force, in peaceful protest, while the leader screamed drunkenly out the window at the locals, calling them "whores" and "bitches" as the locals sang songs in Hawaiian and recited ancient chants about Pele on the beach, held signs "Cult not wanted here" along the road fronting their vacation rental house and so on. All day... all night... all day again... all night again...

Our Kauai mayor came went to the house to chat with the members of the group and explained why co-opting the the goddess figure of cultural legend and hula, creator of fire and volcano, was offensive to the locals, who identify strongly with the culture.

He offered them a police escort to the airport, should they choose to leave. He leveled with them by saying they would not be welcome anywhere on the island, the same exact thing would happen.

Then the mayor came out to address the protesters with a warning to keep it peaceful, don't break laws, and basically de-escalated the situation.

Imagine the group of cult members in the house, surrounded by 100 angry Hawaiians chanting, holding signs, and shouting "go home" and so on...

The next morning, the cult members took our mayor up on the police escort to the airport. They headed to Maui... Upon arrival at the airport on Maui, they were not allowed to leave the airport, because they had not booked approved accommodations for the 14 day quarantine, so the local Visitor Aloha Society of Hawaii found them them air fare back to the mainland. End of story.

Here is a 13 minute video of our mayor talking to the group of protestors, after our police department had to close the road, to keep the number of protestors to under 100. Our mayor has the total respect from our residents, so we do as he asks.

@Julie808 Thanks for taking the time to help me understand. The Mayor ROCKS! I can see why people elected him!

Wow, that's gotta be scary for any community, especially one like yours on a small island with a very delicate ecosystem and probably social services not adequate for a group of nutbags like this. I'm happy they are leaving, sorry for wherever they wind up. Good luck to all of you, may harmony find you all.

I went and researched this group on reading this.
I think we can sum them up in three words:
Crazy wackadoodle moneygrabbers.

"Amy" makes David Koresh look like Richard Dawkins.

Sometimes having a body of water between one community and the crazies can be a great wall.

Yep, it's working to keep covid out too! We have a moat around us, and anyone crossing in gets quarantined. 🙂

@Julie808 Wish we had something like that. This summer we were swamped with tourists. Surprisingly, there was only one new case.

Mar-a-Lago probably wasnt a bad place either, until Trump and his cultists moved in.But if you want to watch cult leaders being interviewed on tv, just watch FOX News!

This one definitely seems interesting to watch.

Unfortunately, I tuned in, but it was a different episode playing, though others saw it earlier on different islands. Oh well. I'm sure I'll find it somewhere.

@Julie808 Good luck with finding it somewhere 🙂 Usually if I find out ahead of time that he is going to have an interesting segment on his show, I'll get somebody to record it for me.

@GoodMan
I think there is some vacant property down in Jonestown Guayana Esequiba, might suit them.

So glad to hear they are gone! Kauai is such a beautiful island, and it would have been horrible for those nuts to gain a foothold there.😉
