I heard about a simillar case years ago, when fisherman took his former captain to a tribunal for wages owed, and the old seaman paid him with a cheque written on the side of a live shark.
There is also the apocryphal case of the farmer who paid his tax bill by literally tattooing an IOU on a cows bum and leaving it tethered in the local Inland Revenues car park
