The forces of Islam had conquered the Holy Land, and the various popes exhorted the rulers of the christian kingdoms to mount "crusades" in order to reclaim the Holy Land for Christendom. The Knights Templar based various on the island s of Rhodes, and also Malta, with bases also in what is now France, were a significant part of the power structures of the period from the 9th to the 13th centuries AD.

The Knights Templar were a vital cog in the crusades to regain the Holy Land.
