What is the best way to hitch hike? Do I need a certain amount of money already? Or can I find stuff along the way?

In my past, I both hitch-hiked , and picked up folks, with all good experiences.

Would I do it now ? Not without someone else with me, and possibly a handy weapon of some sort ... Be cautious and wise.

Specific goal; backpack, along hyways. Don't need money unless you want to eat and drink; I would not count on fiding stuff unless you are a great forager.
