I just started reading The Satanic Verses for the second time, and I still can't figure out what all the fuss was about. Any other literary types here that can help me understand why the author would get a death sentence from the Ayatollah over this novel?

I read "The Moor's Last Sigh", because when I began reading "Satanic Verses", I could not really get into it.
Wrote a published book review of it at my university.

I read that years ago, and really liked it. The fatwa was issued on the grounds of blasphemy and unbelief.

I think the main complaint was that he used an unflattering nickname for Muhammed, more honestly I think he was to be used as an example of what would befall those who left the faith and allied with western intellectuals I'm amazed you can read it twice, once was laborious.

The second reading is to try and understand the things that confused me during the first reading. I'm weird like that, it bothers me when I can't 100% make sense of a story.
