And all this time I thought it was a silly fashion statement.

Back in the 1980 I worked in Middlesbrough, which then boasted one of the first "Distressed" clothing stores (Psyche) it is still there today and is now part of a huge chain.
A colleague of mine (Steven with a V) returned from his lunch with two pairs of Psyche distressed Jeans, that were clearly second hand, washed out and full of holes. He started showing on the first pair and boasting they had only cost him £75 (A fortune in 1984 for clothes) to much amazement and gasps from the rest of us. Not understanding our exasperation he pulled out the second pair of even more dilapidated rags and announced that these ones had cost him £90.
I could not help but ask why the second pair were so much more expensive, and with no sense of irony at all he told me it was because the holes in the second pair were bigger!

No wonder the Psyche company went from strength to strength so quickly, some people will by any old crap for a designer name.
