1. Surging renewables brought relief to the UK
   Green energy has overtaken gas as the UK’s leading source of electricity this winter, sparing the country from an even worse energy crisis. That’s according to analysis by the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU), which said offshore wind was leading the charge.

2. The US appeared to be winning against cancer
   There was some encouraging health news from the US this week, where cancer death rates have reportedly fallen by a third since 1991. That’s according to the American Cancer Society (ACS), which attributes the decline to early detection, improved treatments and less smoking.

3. Ethnic segregation in England and Wales is waning – study
   Ethnic segregation is on the wane in England and Wales as neighbourhoods become more mixed, according to analysis of the 2021 census. The findings, published in The Geographical Journal, confirm the steady decline in segregation noted in all censuses since 1991.

4. The ultra-rich pleaded for higher taxes
   “Tax the ultra-rich and do it now.” That was the plea from more than 200 members of the world’s super-wealthy, who this week signed an open letter calling for higher taxes to tackle inequality. The coterie of 205 millionaires and billionaires, including actor Mark Ruffalo (pictured) and Disney heiress Abigail Disney, signed the letter ahead of the World Economic Forum meeting in Davos.
