Some kid fails with a subpar AI generated paper. Someone dies in a crash because they trusted AI autopilot. Those seem more reasonable dangers than hypersentient AI trying to destroy humankind.

Unfortunately, too many equate money with brains. Yes, a lot of what I have read about AI is scary but we think that with our out of control population growth this will be the final technology to save us. Instead, it will be a technology that will supplant us. Welcome to the world of the BORG.
