When there are too many people in the world, people tend to become more selfish. In 1960, there were only about 3 billion people, and in 2023 there are now more than 8 billion. We can't sustain that kind of population growth for very long without supplies, food and housing, becoming more scarce. When things become scarce, people tend to just look out for themselves.
