There is a word for this behaviour
It is called Nelsonianism
It comes from soon to be Admiral Lord Nelson, disobeying the order to not engage the French at the Battle of Copenhagen and placing his telescope to his blind eye, and declaring that he could not see the ships of the British commodore, who was attempting to set up an alliance of neutrality and was signaling to let Napoleon's fleet take Denmark as an appeasement.
Nelson won the battle and became a hero, much to the anger of his superior officer who was consigned to the dustbin of history.
Nelson did this for the best of reasons, to overcome a dictator, todays Nelsonian leadership, "turn a blind eye" to atrocity for an all to more expedient reason; Profit
