Here is a priest that live all his life as a faithful servant. He lived in a time when to disavow god would get you killed. After his death his real thought were published. He was an atheist.
To understand his choices you need to understand the times he lived in: for those who truly believed in trying to help the down trodden the priesthood was literally the only place. It seems to me he was just such a man a true socialist unwilling to give up helping the plight of others despite his lack of belief in the religion he was supposed to be preaching.
That's and interesting take on it and I agree.
