A valuable reminder, and, as @Stacey48 said, curiosity can make a difference. If you care about what the other person considers important, if you care about the relationship, staying curious may keep you away from aggressively pushing positions (your preferred solutions) with words which may damage the relationship. The tipping point always has to do with how much we value a relationship, and how well we manage our emotions (our emotional competence). My not-for-profit website has many techniques to help. Like these two:

Concern for the iumpact of our words is always appropriate. We always need to pick the right words which express as prcisely what we intend as possible, and to make sure they convey and create the right emotional tone.
