One of the most brutal battles between Japanese infantry and U.S. soldiers was actually fought on U.S. soil. The Battle of Attu that took place in the Aleutians was hard fought on both sides and hard-won. Thousands of Japanese soldiers fought; only 28 survived. The U.S. buried 549 troops. In the Pacific theater of WWII, only Iwo Jima was deadlier.
