Racial "Start Over Day"

Should we have a "Start Over" day where all races agree to start over and let bygones be bygones? After this day, racism should be seen as being in "bad taste" and more ways be unlawful. I have written on this subject in the past. For more information go to Face Book and look for "Start Over". The day would probably need to be be advertised for a year. Make it a day of celebration in all states and cities. The celebration might turn out to be mostly a token, but then it might also prove to be a success. What have we got to lose??

On Sunday it's 10-no, 6 yes, and 3 never improve anyway. There is a good book named "Everybody Lies". It's an excellent book about how people use Google and the results. The number one word typed after " with" is "mom". When we Google we are looking for the truth. After the Furgerson riots president Obama gave a speech. All the news channels raved about what a perfect speech it was for the situation. However, the traffic to white a supremist website increased by fold and the number of new enrollees increased dramastically. If you look at what is Googled, it does not paint our nation in a pretty light.

Racism is borne of scapegoating, which is borne of fear of poverty through limited resources, which is a by product of capitalism.

So long as there are haves and have nots and so long as there is a ruling class that is keen to stoke the infighting for their own ends, there will be racism, and all the other prejudices too.

On Wednesday the vote is yes 5, no-8, and 3 say racism will never improve. One responder pointed out that South Africa already has this day celebrated so at least someone thinks it's a good idea. I have never heard of South Africa's Day.
What can be done to improve relations in America?
You know, another problem in America is the growing disparity between the rich and the poor The middle class is shrinking rapidly. Capitalism isn't all that it is cracked up to be. Of course, neither is socialism, communism, or fascism. The trickle down theory doesn't work.

I don't think racism is as big a problem as people seem to think. We have come a long way, to deny that is just ignorance.

Perhaps it depends on where you live or if you are a minority. I have seen a shit ton of racism living both in rural and metropolitan areas.

It's a lovely idea, but I think it's really unrealistic. As a white woman whose entire family history has consisted of a privileged role in society, I would be ashamed to look into the faces of people of color who have carried all the wrongs of racism on their family's backs and say, 'let's let bygones be bygones." We're still doing it. We've got a LOT of things that need fixing before we're even close to a playing field, and I think that's necessary before we start trying to forget the past..

Even if this is unrealistic on a grand scale I like the idea and think it it might actually work in smaller groups with other issues--like in a family divided. Hmmm--: wonder if it could work in church congregation!!

Racism is to ingrained into society to just let go of it. Many people have too much stock in the racism argument and would no longer have that argument (even though it is valid) to use as a platform for their standing in society. You can't change peoples thoughts and actions with wishful thinking, I wish you could.

My bible says... "you shall not be polled by strangers".

A start over day could only be feasible if all the property and land that White Americans aquired off the backs of African Americans and Native Americans was redistributed. We would never be on equal ground. Letting bygones be bygones is a pretty naive idea.

It’s an individual thing. You can’t make people start over. You can set an example.

7

You can’t just start over. Racial tension can improve but to start everyone over on an even playing field is next to impossible. You have too many things at play. A million and one things would have to happen first. The history alone is enough to make a generation down the line start the process all over again. We are talking global agreement, property returned, land returned, erasing hundreds and hundreds of years of racial slurs, pre existing notions, and colorism in music and television.

No where near easy to set aside differences and just say “we cool?”.

*Edited: spelling and a slight exaggeration fixed

Yeah. The whole idea sounds to me like an attempt to take hundreds...thousands...of years of systematic discrimination, oppression, and exploitation and just brush it under the rug.

"We're good now, yeah?"

Uh, no, we're really not and it's pretty goddamned disgusting and privileged that you could think it'd be that easy to pretend it never happened and isn't still happening today

We kind of already have that.

Hey thanks for the tip about dicrimination day. I have never heard of it. Think it could fly in America??

@Grecio I doubt it. Most racists insists that they aren't racist. If you are unable to recognize it, you can't change it.

Start Over day should include forgiveness for all the wrongs done to groups of people in the past. The whites, blacks, hispanics, Jews should be included as well as the Myans and the American Indians. Black enslavement and mistreatment, the holocaust, all the world atrocities, all these were about people being wronged in some way. The greatest wrong was probably the annihilation of the more than 20 million native Americans living in North and South America soon after the discovery by the Spanish, English, and British.
Nobody can do anything about any of this now. (The Bible says the sins will be visited on the offspring) or something like that. That doesn't make sense. (and is maybe off the subject of this post).
There will be many people on all sides that are not willing to forgive and start over, but I believe there are a small percentage of people that aren't willing to forgive. I also believe that most people in the world are not racist.
Maybe I live in fantasy land.
