Poof! mines gone too.
I think America was a melting pot of cultures bringing their linguistic idiosyncrasies to the table. Webster may well have been trying to reduce those differences to a minimum while also doing his very best to use specific words for different things, such as holidays and vacation.
This sounds suspiciously like folk etymology. I found this: [livescience.com]
That sounds somewhat more plausible. My family migrated from Germany in 1720s. The name lost an ‘n’. It couldn’t swim, I guess.
@AstralSmoke Yeah, etymology has been a hobby of mine my whole. Words, phrases, etc virtually always have simple direct explanations, the more convoluted and contrived, the more likely they are to be made up. Plus, telegrams charged by the letter, it wouldn't make sense for newspapers to charge by the letter. Would be a huge hassle counting letters, and the savings by cutting out a few letters here and there would be beyond trivial.
You beat me to it (not a surprise!) I'll delete mine.

Posted by qpr81Trajan's column in Rome. Shame they put a pope on top of it. Even though this is a monument raised over a genocide it's still something worth seeing.
