Got lucky with this one..
I was picking up some equipment and walked over to the edge of the drive. I started hearing a hissing sound. Being that I was around a bunch of pipelines, I thought maybe a pipe was leaking. Took me a second to realize that it was coming from around my feet. I was standing well within striking distance of this cotton mouth. Luckily, looks like he is getting ready to shed and his eyes fogged over. Might have been a different story, might not have been.. but at least I got to see my first wild cotton mouth up close.
I have always heard that water moccasins are very aggressive and will go after you with out being provoked .
My understanding is that they'll chase you, but not likely to bite you. More like trying to scare you off. I have yet to meet one, so I don't know personally.
If it were a cottonmouth, it's very unlikely it would have bitten you. If you were to antagonize a cottonmouth enough to bite; they're pit vipers and can strike effectively in total darkness.
Yeah, I was always told they usually only bite as a last resort.. but looks like I misidentified it. I've lived in VA Beach/Chesapeake over 6 years now and have yet to find a cotton mouth.. even though they're supposed to be somewhat common.

Posted by InsectraA cute grey treefrog (Hyla versicolor) that I found in my birch tree, this afternoon. His camouflage was great and I only discovered him when I heard him calling.
