Maybe not the sort of critters that this group thrives for; but among my favorites, nonetheless... A charming pair of barn swallows had been eyeing the overhang on my deck for the last week, and I decided to finally intervene: I provided them with a suitable surface to build their nest on. I just love these little birds, and their building know-how.
Anyway, put this simple "shelf" up this morning, and already, they are utilizing it... But, their blueprint ignored the cleat (or shelf) I made, and they opted to make the bottom of the bowl/nest near the top!
They know what they're doing, though... Happy to have helped them out all the same.

My mom usually has 5 or 6 of these nests around her house. The best nest is the one in front of the kitchen window where we can watch the babies!
