I am feeling intense guilt. I opened my balcony door. Zoe decided to get some fresh air. I forgot to check for cats when I closed the door and went to sleep. In the morning I called for the cats. Cloris came. No Zoe. I finally looked on the balcony and there she was. She spent the night in cool temps - about 45 degrees F. I felt so awful I opened up a can of her favorite food and begged her forgiveness. Thankfully, she did not appear worse for the wear. A couple of years ago I accidentally shut the closet door, not knowing she was napping in the closet. She was trapped there while I was at work. Again, severe guilt. But she appears to be forgiving.
I've read cats sleep about 20 hours of the day . For the most part , cats will curl up and sleep , if they're bored . She was wearing a fur coat . Although it was most likely cooler than she would have preferred , she was wearing her fur coat . It was probably worse for you than it was for her .
Maybe leave yourself a post-it note next time?
Our favorite thing here is to let one get downstairs to the basement - they love to be there to look out the windows there into the bushes at the birds - but it's much cooler there and their food is upstairs!
They all seem to have figured out that banging on the door will eventually work if they end up on the wrong side of it for too long! lol
(And yes I always feel guilty).
Furr protects your girls ...don't feel guilty forgive yourself....talk to them ahead of departure time asking them permission for your absence from their regal domain....if either is not visible for their dispensation for your plan, you'll have ample time to find each in a small place
One of mine escaped out the door. I went out nothing,she was gone. I searched door to door for 2 weeks, fliers on poles and sightings called in --running to see each one nothing I had given up hope. Then at 5 am her brother howled and woke me up and he let out another howl and he ran for the door, I looked out the window it was her. I opened the door slowly I did no want to scare her off. She marched in and looked up Well are'nt you going to feed me? I gave her a full can of tuna. She had lost half her weight. I could not believe it. I was so happy to have my pumpkin home!
*at 5am 2 to 3 weeks later
I had read that setting their cat litter box outside , helps them to find their way home . Over time , the scent can spread up to two miles , and they can track that . One of mine was in the house around 5:00 A.M. , then chose to go for a walkabout . I didn't think much about it until late in the day . The next day , I was scared for her . I recalled the litter box thing , so set hers on the side porch where it wouldn't get rained on . It took another 24 hours , but she showed up , very bedraggled looking . I think someone had thrown some greasy water on her . I wrapped a towel around her and held her for a bit , then set out fresh food . She ate and continued to clean herself up .
@Cast1es That's a great tip for the future glad your kitty turned up! j
She may have consideredit an adventure to ‘camp’ on the porch
We never let her get out again we took her right to the vet and she had lost 40% of her weight! She said she probably did not eat the whole time she was gone.Pumpkin was a very special cat. She lived 18 years and I still call the other cat by her name some times.
@scout123456 40% weight lossin one night??? I don’t buy it
@Justjoni two to three weeks
@scout123456 Oh - I was originally intending to comment on the original post - sorry, confused
@Justjoni thats ok I missed putting in that detail and someone caught it. I went to sightings crawling under bushes ruined some clothes too but, in the end I think walking the neighbor hood every day calling her reminded her and she was able to find her way home

Posted by LaurenI thought this was an accurate representation of how we feel every time we remember our last cat, which happens often when my daughter and I laugh over our current cat's antics.
