Keeping a low profile in the south...

How do you handle living in the south with religious zealots and republicans? It's difficult finding like minded individuals.

When I have to mingle , I try to concentrate on their good points, and avoid discussing religion.
Though if they inquire directly to me about such things, they'll get the truth !

I simply do not talk about religion. If someone asks me what church I go to, I respond, I am not a church-goer, If they persist, I change the subject. On politics, I express my rejection of right wing views by prefacing my remarks with, " I respectfully disagree, then go on to express my point of view and the rationale behind it --whenever possible backed by concrete facts or data.

Indeed it is. I actually have no friends these days as it seems the older they get, the more concerned with death they are which prompts them into getting right with god which apparently means giving up my friendship

Amazing how fast folks find 'god' in the hospital or jail. I guess finding a crutch when you're at a low point is human nature. Everyone wants to believe something- especially if you can't believe in yourself. I find that equally sad. Be strong!

I live in the south, Weird Florida, but never a problem here at all and there are many like minded in this site from Florida, but if I just mingle with like minded people only the world would be so boring, I just don't boast or broadcast my lack of belief and when some zealot or nut wants to proselytize I quickly say, save it for some other place where people don't mind hearing your preaching, I definitely mind and don't want to hear anything about religion!
