Memorial weekend is the traditional start for our South-Central Alaska garden season. It is strange to see everybody rush to get their gardens planted as quick as possible and most garden centers will be sold out in a week. We have had several weeks of nice sunny 65-70 degree F weather, but there is always a real threat for a late frost. It is not wise to try and beat mother nature. Last Friday, May 22, we had a light frost and the early morning low was 31.5 F at my house. Many people had a lower temperature and lost some plants. I am glad I didn't plant outside too early and the space heater in my greenhouse kept it above 40 F so my plants were safe...
