We've been working on making a new flowerbed, and started building a raised bed last summer. Unfortunately, it's been raining so much here in Virginia, that we weren't able to get the soil till a few weeks ago. Otherwise, we'd have been paying for all the water, too! This is a native plants-only flower bed. I live in the city, and I wanted to attract and feed native pollinators and birds.
My list of plants is:
Perennials
Achillea millifolium, yarrow
Antennaria plantaginifolia, pussytoes
Asclepias tuberosa, butterfly weed
Conoclinium coelestinum, wild ageratum
Geranium maculatum, wild geranium
Liatris pilosa, shaggy blazing star
Lobelia cardinalis, cardinal flower
Opuntia humifusa, Eastern prickly pear--which my neighbor gave me when we moved in--his is 20 years old!
Penstemon digitalis, beard-tongue
Pyncnanthemum incanum, hoary mountain mint
Rudbeckia fulgida, orange cone flower
Solidago nemoralis, gray goldenrod
Symphyotrichum laeve, smooth blue aster
Symphyotrichum oblongofolium, aromatic aster
Grasses
Eragrostis spectabilis, purple love grass
Shrubs
Rosa virginiana--after just a few days, it started showing leaves!
Wow, a lot of work. The stones walls should also retain some heat which would be good for cool evenings.
Good point!
@SilviaPark Painting them black would add even more heat (but it might get too hot in the summer.)
Looks impressive. Please post when everything is up and flowering.
I love it. Always nice to see someone add a little beauty to their spot on this earth.... Hope everything does really well for you.
Thanks! When we move in 2 years ago, there was a chain link fence across the front and some really ugly, overgrown bushes. This is going to be so much nicer to look at!
Looks like this is going to be a permanent planting . You might want to add some sorrel . It's an easy growing wildflower that has clover like leaves and beautyful , massive , tiny , pink flowers , land adds nitrogin to your soil .
Is there a native variety?

Posted by KateOahuI saw some pretty flowers on a walk today. I’d never seen a white Hibiscus before. And I do not know what the pink flowers are.
