Found this 2 inch monster corpse on my back porch this afternoon. Eeek! Apparently it's a wheel bug and they are an indicator of a low pesticide environment. And, they prey on garden pests like japanese beetles (yay!). Good bug. Here's hoping it laid eggs for my garden next year!

Wow, looks like something one would see at Halloween. All, that matters, though, is it's good for gardeners. I remember an entomologist giving a talk to a fruit club I once belonged. He showed a really, scary and morbid film on a lady bug going after some aphids. Insects don't have an easy life.

I was really intrigued by the stegosaurus ridges once I got over the initial case of the creeps.

Yes, isn't that great? And they are so beautiful to watch.

Yet another reason for me to love them!

Their larval form dines on the mosquto larva too, much more effectively that the adult form. One reason to have leaf litter on the bottom of your pond if you have one.

That's an interesting thing. I have had mosquitoes here even during the winter. Did some research and found fruit flies can breed in the water in the P traps under the sinks and tubs. I have 5 sinks and a tub I seldom use so I figured there is an open water mosquitoes can breed so I closed the stoppers and then looked for ny other sources of open water. The few mosquitoes I found were very small. In the summer they are much larger (so I thought). One day a friend was over and we watched a mosquito on the window. He said it was not a mosquito in that it had no long nose. It was a mosquito killer. We do have lots of dragon flies here and adding a small bowl of Listerine in the bathroom has helped me to be mosquito free this year.

In the past I have planted both lady bugs and praying mantises in my yard. It is getting harder to find them for sale anymore where I shop, but they continue to reproduce in OK numbers. I just like to add a little different genetic material every few years.

And my pride and joy in the herb bed (like I had anything to do with it) is the praying mantis egg sac. I just love these big green weirdos. Named this year's gal Margaret P. Mantis. I swear she listened when I talked to her over morning coffee!

That's good news.

I'm taking it as good news. Even tho I darn near peed my pants when I first saw it. 😅

Posted by KateOahuI saw some pretty flowers on a walk today. I’d never seen a white Hibiscus before. And I do not know what the pink flowers are.
