I'm populating new garden beds, and will be for the next few years. A friend gave me some hosta seeds. I've only transplanted hostas. Has anyone tried them from seed before? Research seems to indicate they are tough to germinate. I was thinking of just free-sowing them, maybe even now? Spring? Looking for any tips and advice. Central ohio zone 5/6.

Hosta need a vernal period to germinate, sow them in fall, keep them in tray outside, bring them in spring time and force.

Snails like eat hosta leaves . Grind up egg shells to put around all your Hosta plants .

Good advice, thank you.

I would free sow some this fall, that is the time when they would normally hit the ground. save some back and try your luck indoors. I just did a huge free sowing of fennel for the butterflies next year. Our growing seasons are quite different but good luck,

Thank you. That same rationale is what I was thinking, too!

@LisaFultonave I've found that if I have enough seeds, I'll try all the avenues and see what works best.

Posted by KateOahuI saw some pretty flowers on a walk today. I’d never seen a white Hibiscus before. And I do not know what the pink flowers are.
