I rent a little house in So Cal. and I've been here for almost 24 years. The owner doesn't maintain or fix much. The landscaping over the years was really overgrown and old, the railroad tie borders were rotting. Part of my lawn and the trees all died due to drought. So finally couldn't stand it anymore, I was bored, not working and I caved. I took out most of it and replanted last year with what I had, some existing plants, mostly cuttings, and free plants that I picked up in plant shares. A few are purchased. I used the mulch and edging that I got on sale. It was very low budget. I did it last summer, so it's less than a years amount of growth. I'm already thinning it. The succulents grow really fast.

Wow! It looks fabulous! Watch out or he'll put your rent up!

If he does I'll rip it all out and leave... Lol! It can come right out. ????

It's fabulous!

You should get a reduction in your rent for that. Shame you don't own it.

That's OK, I can do this anywhere. The rent is cheap, it was only raised once in 24 years so I don't mind. The house is so run down, I'm trying to make it feel and look like less of a shit hole. Lol! It was getting depressing. Also, I can easily take the better stuff with me. I'm using it as a growing area for future landscapes... For instance, my daughters whole front yard still needs to be done. 😀

@CaroleKay

If it's a "shit hole", I'm presuming the outside looks better than the inside?

There are some issues with the foundation. There is a lot of earthquake damage inside and big cracks and buckling on the walls and ceiling, There's kind of a hole in the ceiling in the kitchen where the roof was leaking and the homeowner repaired the roof, but the whole roof is shot. And he didn't repair the ceiling. I have repaired some of it but it just keeps occurring and getting worse. Some window and doors will not open (or close) due to the house shifting. The garage foundation is cracked and the garage is so crooked that the door barely closes and opens, It's always off the track and broken. Almost everything original from 1950. I have plumbing issues. I rent from a slum lord. At first glance, everything looks really nice, because I keep it tidy and have nice things, lol! I do have central air and heat. But otherwise, it's a falling down shack. It's cheap and I don't make waves because the landlord is crazy. I guess you get what you pay for, and I like the price.

@CaroleKay

That's quite shocking to read, and a little disconcerting - earthquakes.

I couldn't believe what I was reading when you mentioned cracks and doors unable to be closed and a hole in the ceiling. What!!!

Now I know why your rent is cheap. But if you're happy there, that's the main thing. We focus on material things so much that we forget how to live, that's what counts.

@Ellatynemouth Thank you and it's really common for some old homes to have earthquake damage here, Even a series of little quakes can cause a lot of damage. Some houses seem to fare better than others, this one not so much. I've lived in California for over 50 years and we've had several major earthquakes. I guess you really get used to it. Nothing really big has happened in a few years, lol. I sometimes forget other people don't experience earthquakes very often. Like I said, it's not really noticeable at first, lol. The house looks nice. I make the most of it. 😀

@MissKathleen It was just inspected last year, as the previous owners passed away and one of the siblings bought the house. It's safe to live in or it would have been condemned at the time. I'm not sure why he wanted it. Unless he wants to turn it as-is because if he tries to flip it the repairs will be too costly. They missed the boat. They should have been keeping it up over the years but the owners aged and died and the family had no interest in repairing anything. It's funny because while I'm living here my mother was nearing the end of her life and I made sure in her final years to keep her house up and in great shape. So when she passed we got top dollar for her house and it sold in just a couple days. It was a beauty with several cash offers. The owner is a fool for not taking care of his (or his parents) investment. I live in Whittier. My Mom also lived in Whittier, I stayed here to be able to take care of her. She was disabled and suffered a stroke several years before she passed. She passed last year. So at the time, I was focused more on her and her place than my own not so important rental.

That's a LOT of effort into a rental...if you want to move...I have a rental that needs landscaping... 😉

I may have to sooner or later. 😀

@CaroleKay I have a house for you!!! LOL

@SkotlandSkye I could do Texas! 😀
