It doesn't have the legacy of San Francisco. It doesn't draw the summer crowds of Provincetown, Massachusetts, and its performance scene doesn't rival that of Orlando or other metropolises. But Eureka Springs has become the Bible Belt's LGBTQ oasis. It's a sleepy but vibrant small town where you know your neighbors and feel comfortable being your fullest self, its residents say. "Not even the streets are straight" in Eureka, goes one saying.

A stone's throw south of the Missouri border and east by northest of Fayetteville, which is home to the state's only gay chorus (officially, that is) and also home to a community atheist organization. I have been pondering retiring to somewhere in that neck of the woods, to get the hell out of Louisiana. That is, if I don't give up on the U.S. completely and move to the south of England or perhaps New Zealand. Cost of living and cost of such a massive relocation are my concerns with those options.
If our legal civil rights don't get utterly stomped in the coming decade, I am inclined to move to Eureka Springs.

Arkansas. Stone's throw south of the Missouri border and east by northest of Fayetteville. In contrast, just an hour to the east is Harrison, home of the original KKK.
