Wow go Connecticut! I found this by accident while researching other news tonight.

"Transgender inmates in Connecticut will soon become the first in the nation to have a legal right to be housed in a prison that matches the gender with which they identify, a law being lauded by civil rights advocates as groundbreaking."

Fuck yeah! Now, if only they could not give the rest of us a bad name by not breaking the law...

LOL. Nonetheless, I guess transgender people are as fallible as the rest of us. I wonder is this the right way to go about dealing with the problem. Will a man identifying as a woman be accepted in a women's prison and vice-versa? I spent 24 hours in prison once and couldn't help concluding that inmates willingly contribute to their own hell. Any excuse will do.

@brentan I have the same concern about their acceptance. Honestly, considering the company they'd be surrounded by (i.e. not exactly known for good behaviour), I think the best solution would be to segregate trans folks into their own housing. But, considering how small the trans population is to begin with, that's probably much less cost effective. So, to save a dollar, trans folks will be in less-than-ideal situations, but slightly less volatile ones, I hope. The transwomen will be marginally safer than the transmen, I fear.

@brentan @Kafirah From what I read in the article leaving them in the opposite gender prison was leading to abuse. Maybe putting them where they identify will be better?
They tried segregating in some prisons and that's basically solitary for that person.
I can't imagine.

Life goal - Stay out of Prison!

@MrLizard I agree. I'm glad this State is trying.
What was happening wasn't right and often was downright abusive.
And a lot of folks who end up in prison claim they are innocent.

Certainly it wasn't a punishment to fit a crime? And don't get me started on what prison does to people!
Another system that needs fixing.
