Just finished reading "Real Queer America: LGBT Stories From Red States" by Samantha Allen.
It's a real life road trip through red states looking at LGBT persons who choose to live there and not leave. I didnt' know what to expect, but as I read on through the book reading the stories, I started to develop a better hope for the future America, which I did not have before reading it. more than anything it gave me hope that Trump/Pence and the general hate that has risen up is more a lat gasp from the past than an actual solid cultural trend.
I would love to think you are right about the "last gasp" thing, but I suspect it will turn out far more complicated than we would wish. Look at Israel. Very conservative Jews are a relatively small minority and yet continue to wield outsized political power.
