Once I had a theory: to have a navigator on trips, they'd need a compass to relate to the map. I didn't want to keep pulling over to the side of the road to read the map. Got a compass on the dashboard. Got a traveling companions who promised to play navigator. Gave them the map with a high lighted route. Showed them the compass. Got lost anyway. Once on a trip, I circled Baton Rouge, La., three times because I depended on my navigator.
Theory #2: GPS will guide me there and back. That was followed by lost signal and a navigator who constantly argues with it when it has a signal.
Theory #3: a map wouldn't lie.

I had to operated an overhead crane at one job. The buttons on the controller were marked “right and left”.
The trouble was right and left changed with the direction you were facing- absolute regencies such as north and south would have been helpful

I don't understand what you mean by "right and left changed with the direction you were facing."
If I was facing east and holding the control, left and right are opposite from what they’d be if were facing west and holding the control.
@Haemish1 I'm so dumb. Thanx for that explanation. My denseness about this is probably due to the fact that my right hand is always on the right side of my body and my left hand is always on the left side of my body. I didn't realize that for other people that changes.
Reminds me of my mother. She could not find north with a compass and could not read a map to save her life. But, as she pointed out in her defense, she always found her way home.

My mother (RIP) claimed my father (RIP) could smell his way anyplace we wanted to go.
Problem: I didn't want to go with them. I wanted to take a horny woman with me.
