I think government must be involved in the creation and application of laws to social institutions like marriage. We understand the difference between state and religion but what about law and morals? That's a tricky one.

Because the hard right religious groups have taken over the Republican party. They are attempting to turn the U.S. into a theocracy of their own image. IMHO
