I live in a town that stopped recycling and told us all to just put everything in the trash can and they take it to the landfill. I'm moving next year!

The problem is, depending on the municipality, placing something in the recycle bin is not tantamount to recycling it. Plastics and packaging with mixed materials are often not economical to recycle. Much of it was being bundled and shipped to Asia. Now it is often landfilled or incinerated.
Every time I take out my trash (very little) and recycling, I am so frustrated to see so many recyclable items in the trash dumpster. It's maddening.
The recycling dumpster is probably 200 ft from the trash dumpster. Hell, you have to drive past both ! Why won't people separate their refuse ??? It drives me crazy.
I have 2 tall kitchen trash cans that easily fit into my apartment sized pantry. One for garbage (coffee grounds, egg shells, Kleenex, etc.) That one is in a common 1 ft plastic bag from the a store. The other is for everything recyclable; mixed materials. Don't even use a trash can bag. Just dump into the recycling bin and take your can back inside. I always use my recycle bags for groceries.
I wish recycling was mandatory. I'm not smart enough to figure this out, but we must stop this constant and careless discarding of 1-time use of plastic, paper, and glass. Please take the extra 5 seconds people.

Garbage is something that has outlived its usefulness and is being discarded. We can not keep throwing everything away, because there is No Away. We need to reuse and recycle more of our resources in a circular economy.
