There are stories going about civilians shooting bad guys and saving the day. While these people seem to be heroes, and I don't want to take anything away from them. Celebrating what they have done sends the wrong message, law enforcement needs to stay with people trained for it, or we'll wind up with a bunch of wanna-be's running around looking for bad guys to shoot.

Gonna respect science. Statistically, homeowners with guns are far more likely to shoot themselves or a family member than an intruder. And yes, the cops can’t solve every social ill and prevent all crime. But the sheer quantity of guns in circulation in the US endangers us all: guns which are unregulated, unaccounted for, and untrained users. It would be great if evidence based common sense rules could be enacted here. Ah, but for NRA histrionics!

About 300 million guns for 275 million people.
You can tell its a skewed, loony argument when this "good guy" stuff starts happening. The Vegas shooter thought he was a good guy, so did the Colorado Uber shooter, a bunch of them. youd figure with all these good guys around (note "guys" ) that these massacres would stop happening. I always think of "you loot, we shoot" back when Katrina was going on, when this "Good guys" bullshit comes up, lol.

Yeah, you want nuts like this out fighting crime? The kid in the kilt?

I wouldn't trust him with a potato gun.

Its funny that you should say "Stories", lol. "seem to be heroes", hahaha. there is a lot of that. For years, triggertrash would love to trot out the Mauser Cates study and cite its findings on Defensive Gun Uses (called DGUs) but on page 11 of the study, it mentions "telescoping", which Mauser and Cates have academically rebranded "bullshitting". The Pro Gun lobby /Cartel has promoted a dangerous fiction to gun consumers in america about this.

Some civilians are properly trained. The thought that people are just going around to kill a bad hombre is the exception rather than the rule. Never heard of one example. This state is an open carry state. If you have a CCW, you can't take a firearm in the same places you can't take an open carry.

Everybody has the right to defend themselves, in one way, shape, or form. Someone breaks into your house and tries to kill you? Unless there is an officer very close, Jimmy Johns will probably be faster! Hey Mr. Bad Guy, can you wait 30 minutes? Let me call 911, then Dominoes! I want to see who gets here first! I got a call from my former business partner recently. He asked if I knew a vehicle. I said no and why. He was hauling cattle, and said there was someone suspicious sitting on the road near the gate. He stopped and asked what he had dropped off a friend that was off his meds. He said he looked like he was on drugs. I called dispatch and it took about an hour for them to get back! Lensecrafters can make you a pair of glasses in that time! Takes that long, they'll find your carcass. If you do survive, you have a cold pizza.

I understand what your main point is, but unless you've been in a situation, you don't know what can happen in a fraction of a second! The leave it to the police is a joke. Because they are trained! I very recently had a knock on the door from an officer. It was about a bonfire I had. Never got a ticket or a verbal warning. Just said he had to follow up. When I was outside talking, he noticed my 7" bowie knife. He asked if I had a bear problem. You need to be one tough mother to kill a bear! I told him my father gave me it for my birthday. I told him he could see it. I reached slowly to unsheeth, and presented it business end towards me. What I noticed is he had his hand ready to draw his side arm! He looked t t for a few seconds, the checked it for sharpless He cut his finger! A knife is designed to cut things! What did he think it was gonna do? He yelled "DAMN THAT'S SHARP". I don't want to know how he checks his firearms...

Yes you have the right to defend yourself, doesn't mean you have the right to use whatever weapon you want, and I'm going to make sure of that. You also don't have the right to carry it wherever you want, and I'm going to make sure of that too. I live in a small town and nobody here needs any weapon to protect themselves, there are plenty of other towns like that. This is my group and I'm getting tired of you assholes coming here with your protection bullshit. Your right to bare arms isn't more important than my right not to get blown away at a school, movie thearter or because I just happened to be standing here or over there.

@MikeFlora Good job resorting name calling! I made some valid points. Not stuff I read on the in inernet. I thought this site was about intelligent debate. Guess not. From what most of the posts on here indicate NO ONE knows anything about a firearm! This is like a car forum that most only know how to fill their tank, and drive! I can field strip an M16 blindfolded! Ignorance is bless, but I wish you the best.

i was going to ask this person if they have the muscle memory to draw on a home invader and kill them in one go, and also if they have guns in position all over their unlocked house, prepared for various tactical scenarios, for when the "thugs" (lets guess what color the "thugs" are) break in.

But wait! It is a citizen that protects thier home with an "M-16", so this is another super realistic gun nut conversation (sarcasm). Oh look, "You don't know anything about firearms!!!" an old gun nut favorite! lol

(pictured, NRA flavored Kool Aid)

So, did your former business partner need a gun to protect himself from the homicidal maniac at the gate? You never said.

How many home invaders have you had to kill in order to protect your home? A few per year, month?

Or is this just anecdotal evidence?

Other than "it takes a long time for police to arrive" I don't know what point you were trying to make.

@TheGreatShadow Nothing personal, I'm the host of this group and we get people like you coming in saying pretty much what you just said all the time, it gets old after awhile. You want to have a intelligent debate there are plenty here that will do that, don't pay any attention to what I said, the ones like you that came before you were seriously hardcore, and for the first time I had to block people.

@TheGreatShadow Is the m-16 thing useful in day to day life? There are plenty of other guns, nobody needs a M-16 to protect their home. Probably don't think 15 people are going to break in at the same time.

@MikeFlora Did I ever say I HAVE one? Or mention that it was good for home defense? Neither of those statements I agree with. For the heck of it, price an M-16. You could buy about 80 AR-15's for what they cost, or where I live, a house! The ones I have seen listed for sale (looked just for the heck of it) were 21-25K! Plus your tax stamp. It's not practical for anyone to really have. Maybe if you are a rich gun collector that wants to show it off to your buddies at the range. Even the AR-15 isn't very practical. But they are cheap. For hunting, you are only allowed 5 rds. The 30 rd standard rd mag is a no-no. For a home invasion you shouldn't need more than 5-10. That's assuming you are a bad shot. I didn't join this group to be a troll. I just like talking about guns.

@TheGreatShadow I meant the blindfolded thing.

@TheGreatShadow The nuts i deal with in other forums routinely flaunt pictures online of whats in their houses, and they have multiple ar-15s, and not only that, have multiple builds made from 85% receivers, that are untraceable "cheap" guns as you say.

Every story of a good guy with a gun shooting a bad guy with a gun is ANECDOTAL EVIDENCE. Every one. These stories say nothing. What we need to look at is over-all statistics.

dare2dream Level 7 June 18, 2018

They are Stories, lol

It is often played up as a reason for being armed. However, if neither side was armed in the first place these things would not happen. Besides, it is a rare occurrence.

JackPedigo Level 9 June 18, 2018

That's what happens when you don't remove the guns from the population.

4

True, and you don't need a gun to be a hero . What does a good guy with a gun look like anyway? how different does he look from a bad guy with a gun? how do I tell the difference?

Kojaksmom Level 8 June 18, 2018

Exactly, @Kojaksmom! I wonder where the statistics are of vigilantes harming/killing the wrong person because they aren't trained to differentiate - they just shoot?

3

If we weren't knee deep in guns these incidents wouldn't be happening. Every other country in the world has the same issues as we do but none of the first world countries have anywhere near our level of gun violence. The only difference is the number of guns.
