After reading the data for the most recent mass shooting, I've come to another nasty realization about America's gun culture.
Our youth are so desensitized at this late date, that being shot, a witness to gun violence, or even the parents of victims/witnesses, cooperating with law enforcement isn't an option. 5 teens shot, after school, dozens of witnesses, crickets no one is talking.
I delved into why this is (in quick research mode.) What I've found so far is disturbing. It isn't gang loyalty, it isn't fear of retaliation, it's fear & mis/distrust of all things American law enforcement/judiciary. Witness statements are notoriously turn into prosecution, which turns into years in jail awaiting trial, forced pleas in order to spend a decade versus a lifetime in prison. *For witnessing crimes, not committing them. (I've known for at least 30 years this was, of course, true. What's shocking is that it's our youth today having to explain this to their parents/caregivers/guardians. I'm guessing my generational peers are either in denial, mis/mal/ill-informed or are completely disconnected from our youth & the police state we have in the USA. It's terribly sobering, no matter what the reason is.)
At any rate, today's mass shooting tracker:
Thru 03-25-2019
76 in 85 days
Perhaps, for some it has become just another way of life. But it is encouraging the youth movement has made some real progress in this area.
