Commentary from me: Prior to 1970, it was not uncommon for archaeologists to attribute religious significance to artifacts and architecture discovered in archaeological sites. Often without a current cultural precedent. After 1970, the "New Archaeology" discouraged this practice and instead prescribed a mote functional based description and less speculation. Finding hidden meaning and ascribing intention to findings has always been a temptation in the field of archaeology. Sometimes they bear fruit, sometimes they are just fantasy and hopeful thinking.
