Plyscrapers ahoy... story about more environmentally friendly alternatieve to concrete making an entrance.
I don't buy it. Pie-in-the-sky ecology. Will never happen.
Wood is just too recyclable... From the article; "Wood absorbs moisture from the air and is susceptible to rot and pests, not to mention fire."
Concrete (cement plus iron and/or steel) is basically Calcium Carbonate - which is organic itself.
It needs CO2 absorbing ocean plankton to create the oceanic sludge which, when compressed, becomes limestone which...when mined, becomes concrete. Look at the formula; CaCO3.....Calcium CO2, and oxygen.
So, like wood, Concrete is a hardened material made by nature...and, also, a "sink" for CO2.
The oceans, too were green in color due to the dissolved iron...which the plankton...by their excretion of Oxygen, caused the creation of iron oxide sediments...where we get the iron for our "concrete".
Before that oceans were cool enough (and the cloud cover dissipated enough) at the birth of our planet..there was no such thing as plankton...so there was no such thing as limestone. The abundant CO2 in the proto-planet atmosphere set the stage for the birth and growth of Phytoplankton...and the deposition of limestone.
Nope....wood will never replace concrete.
Didn't know a lot of this information. Many thanks for sharing!!!
