In my opinion, while it would seem almost certain that, prior to organized religion, an evolutionary survival advantage would have been conferred upon hominids who ascribed unknown agency (which led to superstition/gods) to natural events, it is a significant leap to assert (or even imply) that, without organized religion (with its doctrines, clerical authority and forced subscriptions), our survival as a species may have been in doubt.
