Looking at Brexit, would Scottish Independence be a good idea right now?
Imagine another referendum where the SNP win a clear majority for independence. Currently the Conservatives are making a pigs ear out of Brexit with only around four decades of unity to undo, what would happen if they had to deal with over four hundred years of being united to pull apart?
I count the joining of the Crowns when James VI of Scotland became James I of Britain, not just from the formal union of 1707.
You cannot be a conservative without being a Unionist too..... Or can you?
Nicola Sturgeon has said repeatedly she wants another referendum, but the power to do it comes from Westminster and they're not exactly in love with the idea.
I have to confess I'm not exactly in love with the idea of splitting up the union either - isolationism breeding isolationism? Nope. Our best bet is still to fight brexit to the last, fight it with everything we've got.
OP is correct, you want to try untangling centuries of union? There's no way they could do it right, no way the Selfservatives would give them a deal even a tenth as good as what Europe gave the UK. It would come down to a No Deal Scoxit. You think no deal would be bad for the UK on brexit? Wait until you see this one.
Prior to the Brexit vote, during the Independence referendum, I was opposed (but, due to not being Scottish, didn't get a vote). Now, post-Brexit referendum, I think the best thing Scotland could do is leave the UK and forge closer links with the EU. What happened in the 17th and 18th Centuries doesn't matter, what happens in the next ten years matters enormously.
Scotland doesn’t want to undo the first Union...the Union of the Crowns 1603 ...just the second one the Union of Parliaments 1707. The Queen would still be the head of State, she is as much, if not more, Scottish than English anyway. It would still be complicated, not to put too fine a point on it, but it’s looking more likely that there will be another independence referendum, now that Boris looks likely to be PM tomorrow....he’s not popular in Scotland. Nicola Sturgeon will be weighing up the best time to do it.
More Scottish than English? Were her family not German immigrants?
@Red_Cat She has a long pedigree which goes back to William I. Her German ancestor George I was not an immigrant, he inherited the throne in 1714 because the Stuart line ran out with Queen Anne because none of her 17 children survived her. He was the Elector of Hanover (King of Hanover) which was one of the German states. The Queen’s mother, Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, was Scottish, the daughter of the Earl of Strathmore.
@Marionville How come they had to change the family name to Windsor?
@Red_Cat They thought it sounded too German when we were at war with Germany so they changed it from the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha to the House of Windsor in 1917... named after the Castle.
@Marionville Precisely my point. The others were Battenburgs
@Red_Cat It is Prince Philip who is a Battenberg through his mother, .but they too changed their name during the war to Mountbatten....for the same reason. Prince Philip and his family were part of the Royal Family of Greece and Denmark and had to flee Greece when the Germans invaded, so they were the refugees you referred to,...his father was Prince Andrew of Greece, his mother Princess Alice of Battenberg.
@Marionville I am impressed by your detailed knowledge and don't doubt a single word of it. I suppose I am just reacting grumpily to the fact that they are surrounded by a mist of sentimentality, and have invented and re-invented themselves in order to stay at the top of the pile. You might by now have guessed I am not a big fan of "royalty".
@Red_Cat Nor am I....but I am a history buff....you may have guessed that too!
@Marionville Yup.
